Good Things Jar

Last week one of my friends “shared” an idea on Facebook that I thought was kinda awesome, so I wanted to share it here. The idea showed this picture –

& then the caption said “Start the year with an empty jar and fill it with notes about good things that happen. on New Years Eve, empty it and see what awesome stuff happened that year.”

Since we are getting ready to start the school year, I thought this would be a neat thing to start. I have a couple different ideas about how to do it. One is to each put something in it each day and talk about it at dinner to expound upon it when we put it in the jar. Then, we could also take them out once a month or at the end of the school year to remember all the things we did. Another way to do it would be to just put something in it each day and then take them out once a week or once a month to talk about them instead of waiting the whole year.

I’m not sure yet which way we are going to do it, but I really want to do it. I also thought that if we took them out each week or each month, we could put the pieces of paper in a notebook based on the dates and maybe even write more about what happened to have a family journal of the things that happened. I guess that would be possible even if we just did it daily too.

Anyway, I think it’s a great way to get the kids talking more about their days, especially as the school year goes on and all they start saying is “good” or “fine” when you ask how their day was!!
